Count the publication correctly
Record the finished trim size, number of interior pages and separate cover requirements. Specify whether the PDF includes the cover and whether blank pages are intentional. A quote for a hundred-page interior is different from one that counts the cover within that total. Identify colour sections and the number of copies needed. If the manuscript is still being edited, say so: a changing page count can alter the binding and production proposal.
Give the printer a usable brief
Describe how the book will be used and whether it needs to lie open for reading or note-taking. Ask which binding and paper combinations are suitable rather than treating a preferred finish as already available. Request the file requirements, proofing process and delivery quotation. Only submit material you have permission to reproduce. Keep an approved final PDF separate from working drafts so the production file cannot be confused with an earlier revision.
